Pairs of gay brothers sought for NIH 'gay gene' search

by Doreen Cudnik

On the heels of National Institutes of Health research that has shown a genetic linkage in male sexual orientation, gay men with one or more gay brothers are being invited to participate in another study sponsored by the NIH.

Drs. Elliot S. Gershon, M.D., Judith A. Badner, M.D., Ph.D., and Juliet J. Guroff, M.S.W. are conducting DNA studies of each chromosome region, looking initially for regions where gay brothers tend to share the same genes.

"Our goal

is to locate

one or more

genes which increase the probability of a man having male sexual orientation. Iden-

tification of

such genes will give us

important insight into the basis of normal variation in this important aspect of human behavior," the researchers said.

They are only studying families in which the brothers are full brothers and not adopted. Parents are asked to participate, since studying DNA from parents increases the power to detect gene sharing in the brothers. However, parents will be contacted only if the parties agree. Confidentiality is strictly protected under the rules of medical confidentiality of the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center.

Brothers who consent to participate fill out a questionnaire on personal and sexual history, sign a consent form, and have blood specimens taken at a local laboratory. Parents who participate need only consent for blood specimens. A volunteer fee is paid to each participant when information and blood specimens are completed.

To obtain a consent form and questionnaires, write the Clinical Neurogenetics Branch, National Institute of Mental Health, Building 10 Room 3N218, Bethesda, MD 20892-1274, by calling them at 301-496-8977, by faxing them at 301-402-0859 or through e-mail at gqz@cu.nih.gov. After you return the forms, they will telephone you to corroborate information and will be available to answer any questions.

Road to Morocco

The authentic atmosphere of a North African marketplace will be recreated at Women's Community Foundation on Saturday, August 12, from 12 noon until 8 pm, when the Foundation hosts the "Road to Morocco" fund raising bazaar.

IN

The "Road to Morocco" bazaar is the second fundraising event organized by the African American Women's Committee of the Women's Community Foundation. Proceeds will be applied to the Foundation's 1995 grants, offered to organizations

that benefit women and girls.

Theresa Coaxum, chairwoman of the African American Women's Committee said, "We want all women of color to realize the importance of contributing their money and time, so more women's organizations can receive grants for projects that empower girls and women."

A wide variety of imported and handmade ethnic crafts, jewelry, clothing, artifacts, and fabrics will be available at the bazaar. The merchandise will represent the cultures of Africa, the Middle East and India. The bazaar will take place in the gymnasium of Fairhill Center for Aging, 12200 Fairhill Road at the corner of E. 124th Street in Cleveland. More information can be obtained by calling the Foundation office at 216-229-5001.
